Lenovo Vibe P1m Express Review
Another Lenovo smartphone with battery life
After Xiaomi, if there’s one brand which is successful in making the right noises in sub-Rs 10,000 budget smartphone market in India, then it definitely has to be Lenovo. Adding to the K3 Note momentum, Lenovo had recently launched its Vibe P1m at a price of Rs 7,999. The new budget offering focuses on the battery life, which others mostly lack in this price range. After using the Vibe P1m for quite some time, here is my review.
This smartphone tries to offer a balanced experience with the regular budget spec sheet package. It is not among the good looking smartphones. The big 3,900mAh battery inside makes the phone look bulky. Again, like any other budget phone, there’s too much plastic. The device sports a 5-inch 720p display and is powered by a 1GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 CPU with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 32GB. There is an 8MP shooter with Flash at the back and a 5MP selfie camera. This is a dual SIM phone and supports 4G on one SIM slot and 3G on both. Overall, this Android Lollipop powered smartphone has nothing much to boast apart from claiming superior battery life.
Specs: 5-inch IPS 720p display | Android 5.0 Lollipop powered Vibe UI | 1GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 CPU | 2GB RAM | 16GB ROM (32GB expandable) | 8MP + 5MP cameras | dual SIM with 4G support| 3,900mAh battery.
Price: Rs 7,999.
What is good? Though the device looks bulky, the build quality is good when you compare other smartphones in this price range. The best feature has to be the dedicated power saving mode button on the left side. The moment you slide the button up, your Vibe P1m will become a feature phone. And slide it down to make it a smartphone. This will definitely come handy when you are running out of juice. On the performance front, there are no major drawbacks. The device runs smoothly without any lags or app crashes. Coming to the battery life of the device, you can expect a maximum of two days battery life on a single full charge. Obviously, this is great news in the budget smartphone race.
Verdict: Given the highly competitive budget smartphone race, the Vibe P1m feels like just another device from Lenovo. The smartphone does hold on to its good battery life promise. If you are happy with two days battery in the similar Lenovo packaging then go for it.
XIAOMI Mi 5 - Best of Mi
Xiaomi Mi 5
Mi is getting closer to the unveiling of the Xiaomi Mi 5. A new render of the device just discovered on web reveals a first for Xiaomi, a physical home button. And that actually ties in with the latest rumor from analyst Pan Jiutang. Back in October, we passed along speculation that the phone would be the first to employ Qualcomm's ultrasound fingerprint scanner. It appears that this might not be the case, which explains the home button. You see, unlike traditional fingerprint scanners, those of the ultrasonic variety don't require sensors or buttons. In fact, an ultrasonic scanner can be embedded under a phone's screen. Xiaomi has found that Qualcomm's fingerprint scanner is not reliable or stable yet. Which is too bad, because an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is not impacted by dirt or other foreign particles that can prevent a traditional unit from working correctly. Since a more traditional print reader will be used, Xiaomi will most likely embed it under the home button, explaining its appearance on the render.
Along with the render comes another piece of information. The Xiaomi Mi 5 is rumored to be unveiled on January 21st, with the actual launch taking place sometime during the following month. We expect the phone will be equipped with a 5.2-inch display, powered by the Snapdragon 820 SoC. The screen will offer a version of Force Touch, and Android 6.0 is expected to be pre-installed. According to the Weibo posting, there will be two versions of the phone. One will be priced at the equivalent of $311 USD, while the other model will cost $389 USD.

Useful smart tips for Smartphone
Useful smart tips for Smartphone
If you are mystified about the features of your cell phone beyond using it to make calls, you’re not alone. Here are a few technological tips to help you get the most out of your phone.1. You can silence your ringing phone speedily by pressing any key on its side (It’s still ringing you can answer it or let it go to voicemail but at least you’ve quieted it). Remember this when you’re at the theater, a concert, or in church.
2. There are several ways you can improve your cell phone’s reception: Use your phone near a window if you are inside a building, as walls weaken signals; move away from all electronic equipment, including TVs; stay away from large objects, especially if they contain metal; and move to a higher location if possible.
3. Nothing uses up your phone’s battery like searching for a signal. Turn your phone off when it is out of cell phone signal range.
4. Before traveling overseas, call your phone company to buy a special temporary overseas plan. Many people rack up bills of up to $5,000 while on holiday just because of international Internet fees. If you can’t get an affordable roaming plan, try buying a cheap phone abroad to use with a local SIM card.
5. If you have an iPhone and want to enlarge the screen for ease in reading tiny type, double tap the screen with three fingers. Then pan around by dragging with three fingers. Turn this feature on by tapping Settings, then General, then Accessibility. Double-tap with three fingers to restore the screen magnification.
6. Make sure that you sync all of your contacts and data with your computer. If you have an iPhone this just requires plugging your phone into your computer. It all happens automatically. Then if your phone is lost, you still have all of your information.

The problem with roaming chargers
The problem with roaming chargers
In our daily lives we have become inseparable from our smartphones. We're always a phone call away from friends, family and the local Chinese restaurant. If we see something interesting on the street, we take a picture and upload it to Facebook. If we're lost while trying to locate a bar, then out comes the phone and we're drinking in minutes. How marvellous!
But what happens when we're visiting another country? Well, that's when the headache begins. First we need to check the power plug for our destination and ensure that we have the correct adapter. Then, especially with Americans travelling abroad, we need to check if the country we're are visiting is on the same cellular network - many American networks use CDMA, whereas most other counties use GSM. Then, if and when, we start using our phone abroad, we're likely to get a nasty surprise when the bill arrives – sometimes in the form of hidden data charges that cost more than the flight!
Those travelling to European countries are particularly hard hit by these roaming charges. Visitors to Europe may enjoy the ease of carrying a single currency and avoiding border checks, but the cost of calls, texts and data is a different story. Simply checking an email containing a picture can cost US$40!
The European commission has for years been working to address this problem, but the phone companies are extremely reluctant to stop what has been a very nice cash cow for them. Phone calls while abroad can be up to 4 times more expensive than at home and data charges can be between 500 to 1000 times more expensive. Furthermore, we're so used to our phones that the idea of leaving them behind just isn't realistic anymore.
The solution!
Fortunately, a solution in the form of a company called Tep Wireless
What Tep offers is a unique service to visitors of 16 European countries including UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain (Australia and USA are to follow soon). The service lets you borrow either a local (but very up-to-date) smartphone. Or alternatively you can hire a Wireless dongle device, which they call a "Pocket WiFi". The Pocket WiFi is simply a portable WiFi hotspot that you can connect, or tether, your own smartphone or tablet to, wherever you are.
While you are away you simply use Tep's smartphone or their Pocket WiFi device to make internet calls, send emails, post pictures or browse the internet. The beauty of the service is that you pay a relatively small up-front cost and Tep pays for everything else at local rates.
What's more, the phone or Pocket WiFi can be delivered to your home before you leave, picked up at the airport upon arrival or delivered to a place of your choice in the country you're visiting (i.e. hotel, office, private residence). When you're finished, you simply pop the device in the post using a pre-paid envelope that Tep provide. The service has been around since 2009 and is already very popular with American tourists visiting Europe. Tep, who were formally called Fonmigo, lan to roll out more countries soon. Their website also has a neat calculator so you know how much you'll save.
If you're planning on travelling to Europe, then this really is a no-brainer, but to be a little more helpful we've put together a brief FAQ. If you'd prefer to skip the question and answers, then visit Tep Wireless now!
